Popular sights include the Vasco Da Gama Pillar, the Portuguese Chapel and the mystifying Gede Ruins  a twelfth century Swahili village that was mysteriously deserted 600 years ago without any sign of a cause. The ruins share a site with the Kipepeo Butterfly Project  an innovative community enlistment programme that teaches the local people to breed the rare butterflies of the Arabuko-Sokoke forest. These specimens are sent to live butterfly displays around the world and bring in quite a bit of money.
